Invite People Into the Struggle

Mark Batterson post:  2-Star Wisdom

This morning we had a 2-Star General who attends NCC share with our staff.  So much wisdom, 2-star wisdom.  A few things that really impacted me.

1) Mission First. People Always.
I love that military motto.  Such a focus on achieving the mission. But also a focus on relationship.  You’re not just fighting for freedom or the flag.  When push comes to shove, you’re fighting for the guy next to you.

2) Economy of Force
I love this concept: you have to choose your battles and choose your battlefields wisely!

3) “No plan survives contact with the enemy.”
The General talked about how a 70% plan violently executed is better than a perfect plan untried.  The plan is going to change anyway!  That is such a freeing thought. Reminds me of something Andy Stanley says: You’ll never be more than 80% certain.  You need to act despite the uncertainty!

4) Devotion to Duty
I admire the strong adherence to tradition, code, orders, and duty.  The church could afford more devotion to duty couldn’t it?  In fact, Paul calls us to be be “a good soldier of Jesus Christ.”

5) “Bring people into the struggle.”
This was probably the greatest exhortation.  The General challenged us to not just “share the victories.”  We need to invite people into the struggle.  I feel like we’ve robbed people of the struggle at times.
